Community Scotland Identity

Designing for Community Stewardship

A brand rooted in Cromarty's local history - trustworthy to residents, welcoming to visitors, and built to flex across everything the Trust does.

The Cromarty Community Development Trust is a group of local residents working together to support projects that strengthen the Scottish village and encourage thoughtful tourism.

Cromarty is well known in Scotland as a place where mountains meet the ocean, with a distinct character shaped by landscape, history, and community. Its work requires a high level of credibility and clarity - the brand needed to feel trustworthy to locals while remaining welcoming to visitors discovering the area for the first time.

The Work

A visual identity rooted in local history

The brand was inspired by Cromarty's existing visual language - historic insignia, established signage, and traditional crests found throughout the village. Rather than introducing something unfamiliar, the focus was on refining what already felt true to the place. Elements from these references were carefully reworked and arranged into a more modern system. The goal was continuity, not disruption.

Supporting community-led projects through design

The resulting identity was designed to support a range of community initiatives - including a mobile sauna for warming up after cold water swims and a new boat dock to improve access to the water. The brand needed to flex across practical, everyday applications while maintaining consistency and trust across every touchpoint the Trust manages.

A modern system built for long-term use

The final mark and logo system feel place-specific, modern, and dependable. With a complete brand foundation in place, the Trust can communicate clearly and consistently - reinforcing its role as a steward of the area rather than an authority imposed upon it.
